Caritas Indonesia (KARINA Foundation) was legally established on May 17 2006 and is an official humanitarian institution belonging to the KWI (Indonesian Catholic Bishops' Conference) with a mandate as a center for coordination, facilitation and animation for the Catholic Church in Indonesia in carrying out humanitarian missions, especially to help disaster victims. natural and disasters caused by human actions. Apart from that, in collaboration with KWI, Caritas Indonesia also carries out humanitarian missions on issues of human rights violations, social conflict and violence, inter-religious dialogue in humanitarian action, gender inequality and various acts of social injustice.

The initial step to strengthen the position of Caritas Indonesia (KARINA Foundation) as a humanitarian institution for the Catholic Church in Indonesia, was to hold the First National Consultation which was attended by 37 Dioceses in July 2006. This consultation was also attended by representatives from Caritas Internationalis and several Caritas members from the State -other countries. Caritas Indonesia is a full member of the Caritas Internationalis Confederation, whose members come from 165 countries around the world.

Caritas Indonesia (KARINA Foundation) is heavily involved in services in the humanitarian sector, such as emergency response actions, disaster risk reduction activities, building community resilience, and increasing capacity for Diocesan social institutions.
